In the story, the girl got her eye taken out by and accident with her brothers. She got her problem when she was very young. It is very unfortunate but it was a blessing in a way. The way the story goes, she seems to be ashamed to have a scarred eye. She doesn't realise that through that scar, she learned how to be tolerant of other people and she learned humility. After her epiphany, she sees how beautiful she is and how beautiful her soul is. She even dreams of a beautiful dancer representing her. She seems to have been released from the heavy burden of her scar.
If someone else were to have taken her place, not many people would have reacted the same way. Many people would have lost the will to live or just waste their life away. It isn't an easy journey to get to where the girl is.
